I took philosophy during my college days, even got a minor in it.
Since that time, I have grown older and contemplated more, and here is the result.

Where do you start in philosophy?  You need a reliable foundation to build everything upon.
For me, that start is as follows:

(1)  Reality [R] Exists
{ ∃[R] }
Reality is the set of all things: past, present, future, here, and elsewhere. It is the set of all possibilities.
Sometimes it is denoted as Big-R.
This is the first axiom.  If one assumes otherwise, then (how am I writing this/how are you reading this)?
Essentially, one must assume [R] to even try to deny the possibility of [R].
It is self-evident.
If you still believe otherwise, stop here until you get it.


(2) At least one Consciousness [C1] Exists
{ ∃[C1] }
Consciousness is the attribute of being able to perceive and cogitate/think.
Let [C ] be the set of all possible individual consciousnesses [C] = {[C1],[C2],[C3],...,[Cn]}
Let [Ci] be the ith possible individual consciousness.
Since any [Ci] requires [R] for it's existence, [Ci] must logically be equal to or a subset of [R]. { [Ci] ⊆ [R] }
Now, the only Consciousness that one can be certain exists as an axiom is one's own [C1].
Since I/you can perceive parts of [R] that are not [C1], [C1] must logically be a formal subset of [R].{ [C1] ⊂ [R] }
Likewise, since I/you cannot perceive all of [R], [C1] must logically be a formal subset of [R].{ [C1] ⊂ [R] }
Also, [C1] → [R]: "Consciousness implies Reality" or "I think, therefore I am".
Using the rules of logic, this also gives ~[R] → ~[C1]: No Reality implies No Consciousness.
This is the second axiom.  If one assumes otherwise, then (how am I writing this/how are you reading this)?
Essentially, one must assume [C1] to even try to deny the possibility of [C1].
It is self-evident.
If you still believe otherwise, stop here until you get it.


(3) Logic [L] Exists
{ ∃[L] }
Logic is the mathematical ability of being able to apply Consciousness [C] to aspects of Reality [R].
It is what allows one to make any kind of sense to one's perceptions for anything more than a here+now mode of existence.
It allows one to build a model "little-r", which is a representation of "Big-R" Reality.
It is what allows one knowledge of [R].
It allows one to indentify and give symbolic representation of aspects of Reality.
This is the third axiom.  If one assumes otherwise, then why bother?
If you still believe otherwise, stop here until you get it.


So, to recap the Axioms of a Scientific Philosophy:
(1) { ∃[R] } Reality Exists
(2) { ∃[C1] } At least one Consciousness Exists
(3) { ∃[L] } Logic Exists

This is the foundation of all philosophical thought.

[C1] & [L] → Reason as a means of understanding [R] Reality

Later on, we will discuss percepts and concepts.
