The Georgia Guidestones

Commissioned in June 1979 by a man using the pseudonym Robert C. Christian and built by the Elberton Granite Finishing Company from Pyramid Blue granite, the monument was a compass, calendar and clock carrying ten guidelines in eight modern languages and a short motto in four ancient scripts. A bomb destroyed the Swahili/Hindi stone before dawn on 6 July 2022, and the rest was pulled down that afternoon.

Stone sizes and weights come from the explanatory tablet: four stones 16 ft 4 in high, 6 ft 6 in wide and 1 ft 7 in thick; a center stone 3 ft 3 in wide; a capstone 9 ft 8 in by 6 ft 6 in by 1 ft 7 in; support stones 1 ft 4 in thick; 19 ft 3 in overall. The X is turned to the Moon's major-standstill rising and setting points and spaced to the 17 ft 4 in overall width on the historical marker.

Inscriptions: English, Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese and Russian faces carry the wording as transcribed from the stones, including the stones' own spellings, and the explanatory tablet carries its own text. No full transcription of the Swahili or Hindi faces could be found, so those two are drawn as letterforms in their scripts, as are the cuneiform, Greek, Sanskrit and hieroglyph bands on the capstone. Text is set at the stones' 4-inch letter size, wrapped to the face width; the stones' exact line breaks are not reproduced.

Estimated: the size of the tablet, the exact cut of the slot, the layout of Guidestones Road and the parking area, and the arrangement of the heap after demolition.

Getting around

Orbit circles a target point. Left-drag rotates, right-drag or Shift+drag pans, and the wheel zooms. W A S D slide the target across the ground; R and V raise and lower it. Double-click anything to focus on it.

Fly moves freely. Drag to look, W A S D to move, E and Q to rise and sink, Shift to go faster, and the wheel sets the speed.

Walk keeps your feet on the ground. Start at the parking loop with Approach, read the tablet, walk between the stones, and look east through the slot or up through the Polaris channel. Space jumps.

Solar time, Date and Year drive the Sun, the Moon (with its phase and 18.6-year swing), the stars and the noon sunbeam on the center stone. X steps through the features with a short note on each, G starts a drone tour, L shows the sight lines, and M steps through the monument's history.
